Dewalt 1/2" Router

What’s a router? What’s it good for?

A router is a tool that spins a shaping bit, a little like a drill. Router bits often have a shape to them that cuts a profile into wood. Full size routers are heavy duty, usually take a 1/2” shank bit and are used for cutting profiles into lengths of wood and for heavy cutting tasks in things like worktops.

I got mine for joining worktops with a technique called a masons mitre and for cutting out apertures for sinks and hobs because I had a couple of kitchen installs in the pipeline. I also used it for machining down oak floorboards to make some bespoke mouldings and threshold strips to go round an inset doormat. It was then used to trim the tops and bottoms of the oak doors used in the kitchen project.

I also built a router table for it which, like a saw table, sees the router mounted underneath and the work passed over the table which has the cutter protruding above it.

Would I replace it or buy it again? Yes I would. As I recall at the time I was torn between the DeWalt and the Makita. The Makita was better spec but slightly out of my price bracket. I have no complaints at all about the DeWalt.

Note: It doesn't necessarily come with any addons I’ve shown in the picture. I'm just showing what you can get for it. Check the detail of what you’re buying before you buy because specs do change.
