Festool Domino tool & Case

What is it? What’s it good for?

I’d hesitate to suggest this as a DIY tool, it was hugely expensive but it’s VERY good. I pondered over it as a purchase for a long time because there are much cheaper options but I don’t regret it.

The Domino is actually the small wooden sort of domino shaped piece that is the actual joining device for the wood. The power tool to cut the hole / slot for it is thus a Domino tool.
The cheaper rivals are biscuit cutters and dowellers. Biscuits and dowels again being the joining fixing itself. The Domino is what’s described as a loose tenon so if you know what a mortice and tenon joint is, with the Domino you cut two mortices, one in each piece of wood and the Domino is the tenon that locates into each mortice slot to join the two together.

There’s two sizes of Domino tool (I have the smaller) and many sizes of actual dominoes as well as additional specialist fixings for corners and other applications. Generally more capable than dowels which in turn are stronger than biscuits.

You can use Dominoes for joining boards together flat, at angles, to different size timber, timber end to end and again at angles. They are one of the stronger methods of making a joint between two pieces.

If you have the use for it, it’s awesome. I used it a lot on the kitchen project, the workbench, the kitchen drawers and the wine rack. I’ve got more projects to do which should give a chance to demonstrate its use on a video. Would I buy another or buy it again? That’s a real “return on investment” question. I’d say it’s paid for itself (just about) but it’s a huge chunk of money and there’s always something else that I “desperately” need...

Note: It doesn't necessarily come with any addons I’ve shown in the pictures. I'm just showing what you can get for it. Check the detail of what you’re buying before you buy because specs do change.
