Makita 235mm Circular Saw & Case

What’s a circular saw? What’s it used for?

A powerful motor spinning a toothed cutting blade with a handle to hold it and push it through the workpiece. Available in sizes of blade from about 100mm up to about 280mm. Smaller lighter ones are good for general purpose work and with a general purpose blade will cut along and across grain and boards as well. The bigger the saw, the bigger the timber it’s good for and also bigger coarser toothed blades are better for cutting along the length of timber (ripping). This Makita was the biggest available in the UK at the time of purchase (there’s a 270mm Makita now). It has a max cut depth of 80mm and I got it specifically with the then future raised planter projects in mind. I have a table I built to convert it to a table saw and it easily tackled cutting both across and along the garden sleepers. I had to cut from both sides but once you figure how to guarantee lining the two cuts up it sails through. I changed the blade for a Freud and it cuts nicely. If you look at the info on the raised beds projects you’ll note I purchased the Metabo mitre saw because I struggled getting the angle cuts with the Makita, this was more due to not getting the cuts lined up properly than anything to do with the saw.

Would I buy it again or buy another? No but only because I’d buy the 270mm version now 😊
