Ryobi One+ SDS Hammer Drill
What’s an SDS drill? What’s it useful for?
The simple bit to start with: SDS refers to the fact that the chuck is a “slotted drive system” originally a Bosch invention I believe.
It takes special drill bits (although you can get SDS adaptor chucks to use it with “ordinary” drill bits.
They generally use a different kind of hammer mechanism / action to a standard rotary hammer drill and as a result they drill into hard materials (concrete / engineering bricks) much easier. Bigger models (not necessarily Ryobi) may have functions like hammer only mode which means you can use a chisel or point for demolition or wall chasing etc.
This one will do drill only, hammer drill and hammer only but I’d say it’s very lightweight for any serious heavy work. I use it exclusively for putting in 6mm wall plugs (which is why all the other drill bits in the box are still shiny) and it flies through them much better than my drill - driver on hammer setting.
Would I buy it again? Hmmm. In the absence of a bigger one in the One+ range I’m not sure. I have an Erbauer corded SDS that I use for heavy work and if either the Ryobi or the Erbauer failed I’d probably replace both with a Makita or DeWalt. That said, it’s nice for light work so if I’m running around fitting curtain rails or putting up shelves it’s an ideal tool. As a recommendation though, definitely get a drill driver first because that will be way more use on it’s own than just this.
Note: It doesn't necessarily come with any addons I’ve shown in the picture. I'm just showing what you can get for it. Also most battery tools are sold as "Bare" which means NO BATTERY so you may need to buy the battery (and charger) separately. Check the detail of what you’re buying before you buy because specs do change.
